• Your local yard waste collection season runs April through November of each year. During this period, grass clippings and leaves in the Green Dumpsters will be collected separately Wednesdays of each week and taken to the Chadron Transfer Station composting collection area.
  • Did you know appropriately disposed of grass clippings and leaves are turned into compost which is then provided to SWANN customers free of charge. To make this compost program the best it can be is dependent on the individuals who use the Green "grass and leaves only" Dumpsters accurately. Inappropriately disposed of debris in green dumpsters compromises the contents and makes all contents unable to be composted.

  • The grass and leaves collected from the green dumpsters is allowed to decompose and is recycled into a humus-rich soil enhancer, called compost. Compost is a great soil enhancer that provides nutrients to plants. Compost is free to SWANN customers and is available at the SWANN Transfer Station in Chadron, and will be subsequently delivered to each community site.
    Please note that tree branches, which will not decompose at the same rate as grass and leaves, should not be placed in green dumpsters. Small tree branches can be placed in the brown dumpsters. Branches that protrude over the sides and top of dumpsters do not allow debris to fall directly into the trucks, this is from the branches deflecting the litter for proper collection. Therefore, large tree branches need to be disposed of at the SWANN transfer station or community sites. SWANN is unable to collect tree branches placed next to dumpsters.
